This ancient pathway appeared long before the human race. It was created when the movement of a north-south faultline in the earth's crust opened up a number of mountain passes. The biggest of these mountain passes lies just south of Villefort, where the ranges of Mont Lozère and the Mas de l'Aire, which otherwise would have formed a barrier 60 kilometres long, were split by earth movements that provided a low level route across them. Then take the train to Nimes, getting off at Langogne.
Through Clermont Ferrand, then Le Puy en Velay, puis Langogne.
