It is important to eat well on a walking holiday. Your muscles need ‘fuel'; consider carrying a few energy bars containing jam, cereal, dried fruit etc. Drinks are essential; you must drink a minimum of 1.5 litres of water a day (2 litres in warm weather). The water should not be drunk all at once, but spread out over the course of the day to avoid dehydration. If you are in a place where you have any doubts about the quality of the drinking water, don't hesitate to use water purifying tablets such as micropur. This is especially the case if you are walking in a country outside western Europe.


  • Don’t forget to eat a large breakfast before setting out (cereals, jam, bread, cheese, butter and a hot drink…)
  • Ideal evening meal: Soup, ham, pasta, rice, bread, fruit.
  • Avoid drinking water from streams and village troughs (clear water is not necessarily drinking water)
